As other reviewers have noted, A Terrible Country is the tale of a Russian-born but more or less American academic loser who goes to Moscow to take care of his aging grandmother. While there, he connects with a sort of radical group of people who bemoan the rise of uber-capitalism in what used to be the capital of communism; he falls in like (maybe in love) with one of these sort-of revolutionaries; he has issues with his grandmother's increasing dementia; and has a number of other encounters with his homeland that create tremendous ambivalence about who he is and what Russia has become.If that makes it sound tedious, it's not; the book is a joy to read. Andrei is an utterly believable character; his affection toward and frustration at his grandmother, the brother who "forces" him to care for her, Russia, and himself (among others) are endearing. He is a sweet man who finds himself at sea emotionally, professionally and otherwise and is looking for a safe haven that may not exist. The book has great humor -- not the type that makes one guffaw, but rather makes one smile knowingly and caringly.
